My Avocado Experiment

I published a video awhile ago about recycling items…one of the things that I have been recycling is avocado pits! I am trying to turn them into seedlings. It does not always work, but it takes little effort. I have already had a few successes in just the four months or so that I have been trying it. I do not usually do much with the avocado pits anyway, since they don’t break down easily.

The Dangers of Dairy

I was a vegetarian years before I gave up dairy and became vegan. What took me so long? I think that there was a lot of misinformation circulating about the supposed benefits of dairy that held me back, plus the fact that I really liked cheese and ice cream. Luckily these days, there are plenty of plant-based substitutes. In this video, my friends and I came up with a skit that shows how ridiculous it is that humans consume cow’s milk…

Vermicomposting

As a follow-up to my video “gardening is the new recycling”, I am posting this video on vermicomposting. In the past I filmed a video of my friend’s worm factory, however I did not explain how to get started. In this video, I show how I started my worm factory. I personally think vermicomposting is easier than regular composting and there are so many benefits!

Gardening is the new Recycling!

We waste so many things in our society, including plastic bottles, paper including cardboard and newspaper…Ofcourse we need to reduce the amount of plastic and other paper items we consume. At a certain point though, it is inevitable that we will consume these items. Start gardening and you can reuse these items in your garden! You can reuse your food waste as compost for your garden as well. Stay tuned for future videos about composting and gardening on my site if you are interested!

Want to go plant-based but think you will miss cheese too much?

A lot of people think they cannot go vegan because they cannot give up cheese. There are so many more vegan cheese options than there were even ten years ago today! Green Terra Hawaii is an option in Oahu. Rebeca Garcia started making cheese for other people about 6 months ago to help them satisfy their cheese craving and stay on a plant-based diet. She is originally from Spain, and moved to Hawaii after she got married. She offers many varieties of cheese as well as pate and chorizo. Check her out at the Kakaako Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings! You can also contact her on instagram @greenterrahawaii. She delivers on the island of Oahu! In this video, she shows us how she makes her jalapeƱo cheese. P.S. In this video, I do not give out portion size, because that is her trade secret…

COVID-19 Update on Masks

I put together a video a few months ago on COVID-19 (the basics). This is a short segment update on masks. I have been getting a lot of questions on masks, so I thought I’d clarify some questions for people, and also review the recent studies on masks and COVID-19.

Laie Vanilla Company

Are you interested in growing the second most expensive spice? Saili randomly discovered vanilla vines growing in the wild while he was on a work project a few years ago. He started hobby growing vanilla from cuttings he obtained from this site, and he has turned it into his business now!

The vanilla seems relatively easy to grow though the harvesting is a little more complicated as you will have to pollinate it yourself and then dry it over 2 months. If this seems like too much trouble, you can purchase a large bottle of vanilla from Saili or purchase some dried vanilla beans to create your own vanilla extract. However, it does take about four months to make extract. Saili recommends using one whole vanilla bean for each ounce of alcohol for your extract. If you do decide to try to grow vanilla, you can purchase a plant from the Laie Vanilla Company at the Farmer’s Market in Kailua on the first Sunday of each month or Kaka’ako Farmer’s Market every Sunday. I asked Saili if he ever sees pests on his vanilla plants. He stated that sometimes he finds spider mites or ants, but they are easily deterred by a either a soapy water mixture or a mixture of neem oil and water, which he sprays on the plants when he sees them.
